BMW Group Plant Debrecen Unveils Landmark Solar Facades by E.ON Energia Infrastruktúra and BIPV Projects

BMW’s new production factory in Hungary now generates renewable energy through its own facades, thanks to a successful collaboration between E.ON Energia Infrastruktúra Kft and BIPV Projects B.V.. This innovative solar facade system transforms the east and west bridges of the communications center into active energy generators, combining architectural design with advanced solar facade technology.

The facades are designed using the BIPV.world platform and is built using the Click&Go mounting system: a lightweight, modular solution enabling fast, precise and durable installation system for every size and type of solar modules as well as traditional facade materials, also in combination. The entire solar facades were developed and prefabricated in Waalwijk, the Netherlands.

„This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation,” said Péter Hirsch of E.ON Energia Infrastruktúra Kft. “By integrating solar technology directly into the building’s façade, we are supporting BMW’s sustainability ambitions. E.ON’s engineering expertise and international background enable energy solutions that deliver real business value for industrial partners — today and for decades to come.”

“This project is a clear demonstration of our expertise and capabilities” says Ralph Dankers of BIPV Projects B.V.. “By working closely with E.ON Energia Infrastruktúra Kft , we translated architectural ambition and technical complexity into a fully integrated solar facade — one that performs, inspires, and sets a new standard for solar facades.”

Under the management of BIPV Projects B.V., the solar facades were successfully realized on-site in Hungary and delivered on time. As a dedicated solar facade builder, BIPV Projects executes the production and installation processes, ensuring quality and precision throughout.

The innovative facades features 427 high-efficiency solar modules, with a combined installed capacity of 185.7 kWp, integrated into facades near the entrance of the BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary. The system meets BMW’s architectural and structural requirements, while maximizing energy yield and long-term reliability. Facade-integrated photovoltaics have a complementary generation profile to traditional rooftop and field systems and are particularly effective during periods of low-angle sunlight throughout the year.

The solar facades are part of a broader energy concept developed by E.ON Hungária Group for the BMW Group Plant Debrecen. On the factory site, one of the largest solar parks within the BMW Group is being constructed, with a capacity of 43 MW and a surface area of 510,000 m². This installation will generate nearly 45 GWh of renewable energy annually, fully powering the plant with fossil-free electricity. Built on principles of efficiency, sustainability, and digitalization, the project aligns with BMW’s iFACTORY vision. E.ON is responsible for the design, construction, and long-term operation of the solar park, positioning this initiative as a benchmark for sustainable industrial energy supply in Europe.

With this project, BMW — together with E.ON Energia Infrastruktúra Kft .and BIPV Projects — underscores its commitment to sustainability and showcases how solar facades can play a pivotal role in the energy transition of industrial architecture.
